First off, let me say that I thought this was a picture book along the lines of the DK Pub. books that would be appropriate for 1st through 6th grades. I bought this for my 5yo and there is so much to read…it makes it difficult to answer his questions without taking more time than he has patience for to read and retranslate to his level. The author does have some sort of theology and it isn’t in line with mine (Reformed Protestant). There is a timeline in the beginning using the BCE/CE (Before the Christian Era/Christian Era) format instead of BC/AD (Before Christ/Anno Domini) one. Why write a book about Bible times but use abbreviations I’ve only seen in Jewish or secular (i.e. Non-Christian)history books? There is also an inset in the marriage section about divorce that mentions the two extremes of the day (as opposed to what *most* people were doing, which I think is the point of the book). I am not reading that to my kid!
Bottom line: while it is informative and has many interesting illustrations, I don’t think I would’ve spent the money on this book if I had another chance. Rating: 3 / 5
I bought this book, hoping to supplement our homeschool Bible studies. I found it not as readable as I had hoped. It’s also too advanced for my elementary aged daughter. The pictures are nice, but it’s just too detailed and sophisticated for her now. Maybe in future years we can use this book. Rating: 4 / 5
Miriam was our tour guide a couple weeks back in Israel and I know her to be very knowledgeable about the country, it’s history, archeology, etc.. The book is well titled and gives a good basic understanding of life back then. Especially helpful in one’s understanding of the Bible and why Jesus did the things he did and said things the way they were. Puts it in context. Such a small book can’t be highly comprehensive, though if you’re interested in the Herods it is quite so. It does pack a lot of information in a small package. The illustrations by the former Russian lacquer box painter, are very nice, representative and helpful. Not a children’s book, highly recommended to anyone with any interest in the country, the times, our Lord and Savior, Jesus. Rating: 4 / 5
This is a fairly good book for basic historical reference on 1st century Judea and the daily lives of the Jewish people. I am a Sunday school teacher and was hoping that there would be a plethora of information in it, but it is greatly lacking in that aspect.
Topics such as occupations, social class, meals and currency, etc.are covered briefly in as little as one page and most of it, I was already aware of and so was my Sunday school class.
I would recommend this book only if you know absolutely nothing about the historical context of the New Testament and are in need of ‘beginner’s knowledge’. Otherwise, there are better books out there for the money and websites that cover a whole lot more for free.
