The Volo's are among my favorite writers of social history. They have written several "Daily Lifes" in which they show their subject in a detailed manner that is also readable and can make learning fun. This book is no exception. It gives a picture of those harsh times. It shows the chaos and the cruelties perpetuated by all parties to the conflict but it also shows how people of all kinds faced it; some with courage and some with ignominy. It gives a glimpse into the life of soldiers(on both sides) as well as civilians. Besides showing politics and war(which it doesn't neglect) it shows the life of the people at the time. Both the normal life of people, and their life when it was disturbed by strife. It doesn't pull punches, but neither does it go out of it's way to assume the worst of people in the past.

Like all Daily Life's it is quite suitable for a young reader of reasonable intelligence. Or an older one who wishes to inform himself in a reasonably digestible manner. While it is difficult to make historical writing that is both good scholarship and a pleasant read, this book fulfills this. It gives a glimpse into the complicated and interesting history of these times and lets people have an idea what it was like.Rating: 4 / 5

When I first saw this DVD in Best Buy, I had to pick it up. And I was not disappointed at all. This DVD explores aspects of Egyptian life that are rarely covered by popular media (AKA pyramids). You learn more about the culture and the daily life of Egyptians from here than from other sources. The presentation is definitely a production with an actor as the narrator, but he does a great job. The visuals are excellent and if you're interested in Egyptian history you will not be disappointed with this DVD. Included is a "making of" section that's pretty interesting -- including some outtakes.Rating: 5 / 5

Follow the Larkin family on their journey from Indiana to Oregon in 1853 in search of a more prosperous life. This book uses actual pictures of objects from the past, many drawings, and diary writings. Their journey took almost 5 months, the family had to travel over 2,000 miles. Some of the 24 chapters include The Wagon, Indian Country, Children's Activities, Crossing A River, Stopping At A fort, Sickness and Death. A greatly detailed book with an abundance of color pictures on every page. Fantastic!!Rating: 5 / 5

I bought this book for myself while researching our family history. It helped me fill-out the lives of our long-gone family members who travelled and lived in this way for months at a time while opening lands from Massassachusets to Virginia to North Carolina to Tennessee to Texas to California. It was a great help in turning out a history that was more than names, places and dates.Rating: 4 / 5

I enjoyed using this book with my elementary students. The language is is not too technical. It doesn't go into too much depth. The photographs are great. The book really gives a sense of traveling over the continent on a wagon.Rating: 4 / 5

The author states that in the 1840s, the size of the United States doubled. This is an exaggeration. The author states that Indians charged tolls for crossing bridges. HUH?? I have never heard a reference to this before, and I am a teacher. I Googled it and found nothing.Rating: 1 / 5

I really enjoyed this book and feel I gained from the authors insights. I would highly recommend it to those who want an understanding of the Tao they can apply to their daily life.Rating: 5 / 5

For those who need a little more illustration to bring the teachings of the Tao to light, this is an excellent way to gain that extra illustration. By combining the teachings of the Tao with personal stories, stories from Chuang Tsu, and his unique and excellent knowledge of the Tao teachings and English language Derek Lin brings these stories and the lessons contained in them to life. This is a wonderful companion to the Tao-Te-Ching Annotated and Explained, or just a really good read all on its own.Rating: 5 / 5

I have probably purchased this book from Amazon at least 20 times...I give it to friends, clients, relatives - and I recommend it to everyone I have contact with - many of whom have purchased it. I was first made aware of it on Amazon when I was searching for Tao te Ching translations, and read the excellent reviews. I purchased it, along with Derek Lin's translation of the Tao te Ching (which is by far the best I've read) and was thrilled. I still am, and reread it along with the translation every day. I have yet to share this book with anyone who doesn't find it of tremendous benefit. Derek Lin's use of parable to teach the Tao is brilliantly done, this book is a jewel, a blessing.Rating: 5 / 5
